Stay Fit and Healthy During WinterWinter is here! As the weather gets crisp and the snow begins to fall, it is time to get out all of your favorite winter recipes.
Staying fit and healthy doesn't mean that you have to give up your favorite winter or Holiday foods. During this season there is an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, that when combined with aromatic spices create foods that are not only delicious but warm, soothing and comforting without all of the extra calories and fat. Experiment with fresh and dried seasonal fruits and vegetables such as figs, apples of all varieties, squash, and of course pumpkin. Bake them (instead of bread or cakes) to fill your home with the sweet aroma of fall. Healthy low glycemic carbohydrates such as yams or sweet potatoes baked and mashed with cinnamon are a fantastic alternative to any sugary fattening dessert. bake some apples with cinnamon or bake yourself a crustless pumpkin pie. Don't be afraid to spice things up with nutmeg,
cinnamon and allspice. These spices should not just be reserved for desserts during fall. Studies have shown that these spices help keep your metabolism fired up and burning those extra calories you may consume during the holidays. Brew some warm cinnamon tea to warm up both inside and out and help keep your metabolism burning. Use roasted nuts where you normally would not like toasted slivered almonds or
pecans on your favorite veggie casserole spiced with some nutmeg and cinnamon. You'll be adding some protein and healthy fat to your diet. Happy Holidays!
